Adsense Keywords - How do you know which ones to use?

Keywords are funny things. You can search for the cheapest keywords to use if you're focusing mainly on pay per click advertising like Google Adwords. However, if you're on the other side of the coin as a website owner and publisher of content, you typically want to create themes in your site gravatating around very high-paying keywords. And this is where the problem is.

There are many services out there selling or giving away keyword lists with thousands or even millions of keywords. But are these any good? Well, when you are creating pages on your site, you can really only optimize for a couple of keywords that are all thematically connected. The other major flaw in these keywords lists is that the highest bid estimate can often be extremely deceptive.

Very roughly, the way that Google works is that the highest bidder will pay a little more than the bidder below them. I'm not going to talk about Quality Score here but suffice to say, this example is just a simple demonstration of why high bids are not the only indicator you should be looking at. You see, to get a much better view of the market, it's really beneficial to see the Top 10 advertisers and what they're bidding. That way, you can see the average being bid which gives you a much better estimate of what you could be potentially earning. The main reason for this is that you can't guarantee what advertisers (read - ad inventory) Google is going to give you. So if you get a better average, you're going to typically do better. Why this average is so important is because in many cases, a market turns out to be totally bogus, after showing a Highest Bid for say $30 but the 7th advertiser on is only paying a few cents. That's the truth and it's a key reason why many publishers don't do well with Adsense... they are simply chasing the wrong keywords.

Now for the good news. I've been developing a service that is totally free and allows you see what the Top 10 advertisers are bidding. And I'm not wasting anyones time looking at the cheap keywords. I'm really focusing on the keywords where the Top4 advertisers are paying over $10. Now wouldn't that be valuable information? You bet! Check out the service so far - Adsense Keywords Gold
